1 Tips for Creating Lanterns from Milk Cans

With the Mid-Autumn Festival right around the corner, it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase beautiful lanterns. Discover a simple method for creating adorable lanterns using milk cans or soda cans. It’s a meaningful and heartwarming way to celebrate this special occasion!

Materials:

  • Milk can or tin can
  • Copper wire
  • Candle

Tools:

  • Nail and hammer
  • Pencil
  • Small paint can
  • Scan paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Lighter
  • Sand
  • Water
  • Galvanized wire

2 Steps to Create Lanterns from Milk Cans

Before starting the lantern-making process, it’s important to clean the milk cans or old tin cans. Fill them with sand and water, and place them in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. This useful tip will prevent the cans from getting dented or deformed during the lantern-making process.

Step 1: Begin by sketching cute designs on the can or using scan paper to transfer an image from a painting onto the milk can.

Stick the paper on the can and start drilling holes

Step 2: Once the designs are sketched, proceed to drill holes according to the desired shapes on the can. Aim for a distance of approximately 0.3 – 0.5 cm between each hole, making sure they are not too sparse or too close together.

In addition, drill two small holes on opposite sides near the rim of the can to create a string for hanging the lantern!

Place a piece of cloth underneath to prevent the can from being deformed

Step 3: After drilling the holes based on the sketches, empty the can of sand and proceed to paint and decorate it with a pencil or paintbrush according to your preferences.

Step 4: Finally, thread the galvanized wire through the two pre-drilled holes near the can’s rim, secure the wire firmly, and adjust it for symmetry.
